Numeracy WB 17.05.10

In numeracy this week we shall be using numberlines and number squares to add and to take away from larger numbers up to 100. It would be helpful if you could practise adding and taking away 10 from any given number. Help them to see that by adding 10 you are effectively changing the tens digit of the number and keeping the units the same.

If they understand this they can move on to add in 11 (by adding 10 and then one more) and adding 9 ( by adding ten and taking one away):

There are some number games on the "Number Square Games" link that are useful for this or click on the links below.

Adding 10 on a number square.

Adding 11 on a number square.

Counting forwards in 10s on a numberline.

Counting backwards in 10s on a numberline.

Keep practising and good luck!

Spanish Links

Where possible this week I have tried to link the spelling words to an online Spanish dictionary so you can easily check the meaning of the words if you are unsure. Some words in english are ambiguous  (e.g. tear can be pronounced more than one way and so mean una lágrima or the verb desgarrar) I have left these ones out.

Please let me know how useful this is to you. I will do my best (time permitting) to continue this in future.

Many thanks,

Mr Lewis

This weeks sound (or phoneme) is /ear/ ( again making the sound "air"). The children have learnt that there are lots of ways to make this sound:

/air/ as in hair
/ear/ as in bear
and /are/ as in square

The spellings for this week are:
grip, milk, bear, tearpearwearswear, underwear, weight, volume.

Again weight and volume are useful words used in Numeracy and you may want to discuss these concepts with your child too.

Many thanks

Plants and Animals hunt!

For our variation project this term I have asked the children to bring in any pictures they have of Plants or animals. These can be pictures they see on the internet or in magazines. If you want to you can also take photos to bring in of any pets or animals you see outside or in the zoo.
The pictures will be used to make a collage display and for discussions in class. It would be useful if you could find out anything about the pictures you collect.
(e.g. are they birds, mammals, insects, fish or amphibians etc? How do you know?) Don´t worry if you do not have all the answers. We will talk about it in class.

Good luck!
